Barry Edwards is a founding partner of Hamburg, Karic, Edwards & Martin LLP, having started the firm with Sid Hamburg and Gregg Martin.
Barry began his professional career working in the tax department of Price Waterhouse where he received substantial experience learning about the operations of various businesses and the tax issues they faced. He then spent eight years expanding his professional experience working as a transactional attorney (first as an associate, and then as a partner) in a well-respected, mid-size Century City real estate and business law firm. While there, he received substantial “hands on” experience and training in all aspects of real estate transactions, including purchase and sale, financing and leasing. Over the years, Barry has acted as an outside general counsel for various clients both within and outside of the real estate industry.
Since the firm’s founding over 23 years ago, Barry has been instrumental in developing the common-sense approach to legal services and problem-solving upon which Hamburg, Karic, Edwards & Martin LLP has built its reputation. Barry strongly believes in knowing his clients, and he starts that process by focusing on goals. Barry’s practical approach to transactions is grounded in his belief that a lawyer’s role is to facilitate while acting as an advocate for his clients.
Whether its handling and negotiating clients’ real estate transactions or advising them on business issues that arise along the way, Barry has earned a reputation as a “deal maker” and problem solver because he never loses sight of understanding the big picture while making sure no details are overlooked and protecting his client’s interests. His clients seek his help not just on real estate transactions but on other matters affecting their businesses because they know he can “get the deal done” or be relied upon to advise them on the right path to take to solve a problem. Barry always gives his clients the information they need to make prudent business decisions.
Over the last 15 years, Barry’s practice has focused exclusively on the leasing of shopping centers and commercial office projects throughout California, Arizona, and Nevada. Presently, he has primary leasing responsibility for more than 15,000,000 rentable square feet of retail and office space for his landlord and management clients. Barry’ clients include both institutional investors and entrepreneurial individuals. Barry has negotiated thousands of leases and/or amendments with some of the most prominent national tenants, including: Wal-Mart, AMC Theaters, Vons, Smart and Final, CVS, Marshalls, Ross Dress For Less, Dollar Tree, Ulta, Sephora, Chico’s, 24-Hour Fitness, LA Fitness, Wells Fargo, JPMorgan Chase Bank, Auto Zone, Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse & Wine Bar, Roy’s, Chick-fil-A and Starbucks. Barry also regularly assists clients in developing strategies to resolve disputes arising in connection with complex lease issues, giving due consideration to relevant documentation as well as to industry custom and market conditions.
When not working, Barry spends his time with his children, Quinn and Camryn, and giving back to the community through volunteer and philanthropic endeavors. He also enjoys playing golf and is often seen “on the glass” at Los Angeles Kings hockey games.
